RAIL WORKS WILL NOT CLOSE HIGH STREET

Posted in Lincoln BIG on July 16th, 2008

Lincoln Business Improvement Group (BIG) and Network Rail today announced that an agreement has been reached to introduce an alternative scheme of works for the South High Street level crossing this summer.

As a result of Lincoln BIG’s proposals, shops on the High Street close to the railway lines will remain accessible to pedestrians during the major works programme.

Matt Corrigan from Lincoln BIG explains: “Network Rail’s original proposals were to close the High Street to both vehicles and pedestrians and to divert shoppers over a temporary bridge in the railway station. However, the working arrangements we have negotiated with Network Rail will see the work completed in stages. As a result, the South High Street level crossing will remain open to pedestrians except on a few occasions late at night.”

The road will be closed to through traffic for nine days, although deliveries will still be allowed

The arrangement has been welcomed by local traders. Susanna Gadsby, who owns Gadsby’s Art Shop, commented: “I’m very pleased at the changes that have been made. It will make so much difference and Lincoln BIG is to be applauded for its efforts to help us.”

Lincoln BIG has also secured sponsorship from Network Rail for a programme of activities and events to maintain trade and the vibrancy of the area during the works. “We can’t pretend that the closure of the railway and these works won?t have an impact,” added Matt. “We can, however, try to minimise this and ensure that the High Street area most affected emerges from the works in good shape, and ready for the important Christmas season.”

Proposals for sponsorship include providing floral displays and hanging baskets to keep the area colourful and inviting, a commitment to keep the works area clean and tidy at all times throughout the works period, a programme of events and entertainment when the road does have to be closed in order to attract shoppers to the street and a promotional campaign via local press and radio to remind people that the shops are open for business and to restore confidence in the area, essential for the commercially important back to school period in August.
