THE BRAYFORD’S BIG CLEAN UP

Posted in Lincoln BIG on September 5th, 2008

Lincoln’s Brayford Pool is the subject of a BIG tidy up this weekend.Lincoln’s Business Improvement Group (BIG) is teaming up with the city’s Sea Cadets as part of the Big Tidy Up campaign that culminates this Saturday (6th September.)

Lincoln’s award-winning City Centre Wardens will join Sea Cadets from T S Wrangler to remove floating debris from the Brayford, which attracts more than 100,000 visitors each week.

Lincoln Business Improvement Group Operations Manager, Mick Lake decided to partner with the Sea Cadets to utilize their boat-handling skills to reach the blighted areas.

“The City Centre Wardens have completed numerous tasks to improve the appearance of areas around the Brayford but, until we had the help and support of the Sea Cadets, we found it difficult to deal with issues on the water,” explains Mick. “The young people who volunteered to take part in this event are a credit to the Sea Cadet movement and a real asset to the city.”

The Sea Cadets is charitable organization, providing personal development opportunities and support for young people aged 10 to 18 years.

“The Lincoln Sea Cadets spend a great deal of time and effort working towards achieving boating skills and recognized boating qualifications,” adds Andrea Waby, Chair of Lincoln Sea Cadets. “It is a delight that they are being given the opportunity of putting those skills to use working with Lincoln BIG in supporting the community and the environment”.

The BIG Tidy Up is a nationwide initiative organized by Keep Britain Tidy and is encouraging everyone to remove litter from their local areas to make them a better, more enjoyable place to live.

The Brayford BIG Clean Up will take place between 10am and 2pm. Spectators are welcome but due to the hazards associated with working on, or near, water additional volunteers are not required to assist at the event
