LOCAL FOOD HERO REACHES SECOND STAGE OF NATIONAL AWARDS

Posted in Mr Huda's on July 30th, 2008

Local chef and business entrepreneur Mafazul Huda, founder of the Mr Huda’s Surma Secrets range of fresh herb and spice mixes, has reached the second stage of UKTV Food’s Search For A Local Food Hero competition.

Mr Huda’s Surma Secrets rocketed to the forefront of the competition thanks to a groundswell of local support in the voting stage. Beating off competition from across the Midlands, Mr Huda becomes one of just twenty ‘Local Food Heroes’ selected to enter the second stage of the competition and compete for the opportunity to represent the region.

“It’s great to receive such overwhelming support from people who have tried and enjoyed the Mr Huda’s range,” comments Mafazul. “To be recognised as providing such a well loved product to people in the local area means a great deal and I hope we can take the competition even further and represent Lincolnshire in this highly acclaimed competition.”

The next round will see Mr Huda face a panel of expert judges, including internationally recognised food journalist and presenter of BBC Radio 4’s ‘Food Programme’ Sheila Dillon alongside ex-Michellin guide inspector and regular presenter of UKTV Food’s ‘The Food Programme’ Simon Parkes.

The Mr Huda’s Surma Secrets range of authentic curry pastes were launched in November 2006 following two years of development at the Surma restaurant in Barton Upon Humber, to provide people with an easy way of producing authentic tasting Indian dishes quickly and easily at home.

Mr Huda’s Surma Secrets range, which comprises Tikka, Kebab, Onion Bajee, Tandoori, Universal Curry, Tikka Masala, Mint & Tamarind and Balti pastes is currently stocked by over 40 independent retailers and selected ASDA stores. The range will also be available at Lincolnshire Co-ops in the near future.

The UKTV Local Food Hero Awards are a tribute to Britain’s independent food businesses. The TV channel, which is found on Sky, Virgin Media and Freeview, asked people to nominate, vote for, and reward their food heroes’ passion for providing great food. Five nominees from each region will make it through to the next round and feature in a television series as the winner of the £40,000 prize is selected.
