JAZZ BY CANDLELIGHT AS DRILL HALL SIGNS UP TO EARTH HOUR

Posted in Optima on March 26th, 2009

Lincoln people looking for something to do when the city plunges into darkness this Saturday evening during Earth Hour may want to visit the Drill Hall and experience jazz by candlelight.

As the Drill Hall has become the latest venue to commit to Earth Hour between 8.30 and 9.30pm on 28th March, jazz musicians Dave O’Higgins Quintet will have to perform in the dark for the first time ever!

“It’s going to be quite a challenge but we’re really looking forward to it,” says Dave. “I never performed in the dark before and I think the atmosphere is going to be unique. It’s great that the Drill Hall and so many other places across Lincoln are getting involved in Earth Hour.”

Earth Hour was first staged in 2007 and repeated last year. Originating in Sydney, Australia the number of cities taking place has grown phenomenally each year and on Saturday over 1100 cities in 80 countries are expected to take part.

Established by the World wildlife Fund (WWF), Earth Hour is seeking to sign up a billion people around the planet who, as a way of showing the word’s leaders that they care about climate change and want government’s to take action, will turn off all non-essential lighting and electrical appliances for 60 minutes.

The Lincoln Earth Hour campaign has been led by Optima Graphic Design Consultants. The company has worked with the WWF for the last seven years and it was Director, Simon Shaw who approached the Drill Hall.

“I was keen to get involved as soon as Simon told me about Earth Hour,“ says Simon Hollingworth, Manager of Lincoln Drill Hall. “We said yes straight away but had to talk to John Holland who is promoting on behalf of NewJazz5 performing in the main theatre that night. I think it’s going to be great night – really special”

Tickets are still available from the Drill Hall box office (tel. 01522 873 894 ) and people wanting to sign up to Earth Hour or find out more about the campaign should visit www.optimadesign.co.uk/earthhour and follow the links.
