Lincolnshire County Council joins local company in WWF’s global campaign
Lincolnshire County Council has given its support to the World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) Earth Hour campaign and confirmed that Lincoln Castle is to turn off its non-essential lights to help the environment.
It is part of the plan by Optima Graphic Design Consultants on West Parade to encourage Lincoln to take part in an international campaign aiming to plunge the city into darkness to raise awareness of climate change. The company has already secured the support of the cathedral and, when it approached Lincolnshire County Council about turning off the castle’s lights for an hour, they were delighted to be told that the lights on the Usher Gallery and The Collection would also be dimmed.
As the name suggests, Earth Hour will be a global event. When the clock hits 8.30pm in time zones across the world on Saturday 28 March, the WWF and Optima want people to turn off all non-essential lighting and electrical appliances for 60 minutes.
Director of Optima, Simon Shaw, said: “We have worked with the WWF since 2000 and we continue to support the charity’s aims to protect not just wildlife, but the world in which we all live. As the county’s largest employer and custodian of some of its iconic buildings, it’s important that the county council shows its support and encourages others to do the same. We thank Lincolnshire County Council for its support. However we still need other local businesses and organisations to get involved and turn off all essential lights and appliances for just one hour.”
