A helicopter ride, ballroom dancing and playing cricket are just some of the dreams coming true for care home residents in Lincolnshire, thanks to a new ‘Wish Tree’ fund.
Set up by the Lincolnshire county team of The Orders of St John Care Trust (OSJCT) in 2009, the UK’s second largest not for profit care home provider, the Wish Tree Fund uses money raised from selling raffle tickets at resident fun days and is used to fulfill residents’ special wishes.
Seven residents have already had their wishes granted, including Gwendy Cook from Eresby Hall in Spilsby, who was treated to a professional dance lesson with Dale Bennett, the twin brother of Strictly Come Dancing’s Darren Bennett, at his dance studio in Sheffield. Ballroom dancing was a big passion for Gwendy, who regularly attended police balls with her husband.
“Our residents often talk about activities they used to enjoy when they were younger or even things they always wanted to do but never got the chance to, so we set up the Wish Tree in order to make these dreams come true for them, said OSJCT’s Alison Whitlock, who organises the wishes along with Activity Manager Anita Rudd.
“Life in a care home can be positive for many residents and achieving these very special requests is just one way in which we as an organisation ensure special times and special memories.”
“We have had a fantastic response from residents who have already participated in the Wish Tree, as well as their families, who are often invited along to enjoy the special day.
“Rex Cook Barns, from Jack Parkinson Court in Mablethorpe, was invited to play cricket with the team at Alford and spent a memorable afternoon at the club along with his family. Another lady resident recently had a helicopter ride and was thrilled to be able to sit alongside the pilot.”
Another 17 wishes have now been granted to Lincolnshire residents and are in the process of being organised.
