Lincolnshire care homes step back in time to the swinging sixties

Posted in OSJCT on June 14th, 2010

The Piggies brought the swinging sixties era back to the county recently with a special performance for more than 400 Lincolnshire care home residents, staff and volunteers.

A 1960’s themed dance was organised by the Lincolnshire county team of The Orders of St John Care Trust (OSJCT), the UK’s second largest not-for-profit care home provider, at Fosse House in Lincoln, for their 16 local homes and day centres.

Special guests the Mayor of Lincoln, Councillor Geoff Kirby and Mayoress Valerie Kirby as well as City Sheriff, Roy South and the Sheriff’s Lady, Sandra South, were also in attendance at the event.

The highlight of the day was an appearance by sixties tribute band The Piggies, who have performed at the Royal Albert Hall and Royal Festival Hall. The guests were treated to famous covers from The Beatles, Cliff Richard and The Rolling Stones, inside the specially decorated marquee.

Residents and staff then enjoyed entertainment from pupils at North Kesteven School who treated guests to a 60’s song medley from the boys vocal harmony group and a 60’s inspired dance routine from all-girl dance group, Transendance. This was followed by a performance from The Priory School, who reenacted England’s victorious win at the 1966 World Cup.

The entertainment was followed by a picnic and raffle, with all the proceeds being donated to the Lincolnshire Residents Wish Tree Fund, which has been set up to fulfill residents’ special wishes.

The event was organised by activity coordinators Alison Whitlock and Anita Rudd. Alison said: “Everyone had a wonderful time today. This is the biggest annual event that the Trust organises for our Lincolnshire homes and it’s a great opportunity for staff, residents and volunteers from all of the homes and day centres to get together, make new friends and really let their hair down.

“The residents really look forward to it and love getting involved by making costumes and decorations to wear on the day. Our staff and volunteers really got into the swing of things this year, wearing 1960’s outfits, decorating the marquee and helping to serve the food.”

The event was a resounding success with all the residents who attended. Alice Barnes, 91, said: “The dance was excellent, it’s the best thing I have ever been to” and Michael Bradshaw-Leathers, 81, said: “I really enjoyed myself today and would like to thank all of the staff who helped to make it such a special day.”
