Stormsaver, the UK’s leading designer and manufacturer of rainwater harvesting systems, has won its 20th UK prison contract.
HMP Brixton in London, is the latest prison to feature a Stormsaver rainwater harvesting system which will miminise its environmental impact as well as saving money.
HMP Brixton is committed to using sustainable, cost effective resources to create a stimulating, social and rehabilitating environment for prisoners on remand and awaiting trial.
Paul McDowell, Governor of HMP Brixton, said: “HMP Brixton was originally built as traditional Victorian prison and as part of the on-going process to keep standards up to date, we are making continual improvements in both the internal and external facilities.
“The staff and I consider HMP Brixton to be an innovative centre where we offer first-class services for learning and rehabilitation. We want the prison buildings and facilities to reflect this ethos. We are working closely with external contractors to create a prison which is suitable for the 21st century.”
HMP Brixton features cutting-edge sustainable technology, which includes one of Stormsaver’s rainwater harvesting systems. The system features a 1,200 litre above-ground capacity storage tank, a pre-tank filter, and a COMBI-system as part of the contract, which will capture, filter and supply rainwater for use in flushing WCs and Urinals.
The system is projected to capture and reuse some 118m3 of rainwater, collected from the building’s 197m3 roof area, which will help to substantially reduce HMP Brixton’s mains water bill.
Lisa Farnsworth, Stormsaver’s Sales Director said: “We are delighted to have completed yet another contract with HM Prison Service. I am pleased that there is increasing recognition of the importance of installing sustainable features into older buildings, to allow them to become more energy efficient and to reduce their carbon emissions. To this end, more and more engineers are deciding to include one of Stormsaver’s rainwater harvesting systems.”
Stormsaver has previously won contracts to feature in 19 other H M Prisons across the UK.
